Composition, or arranging the things you see in the photo, is a really big part of what makes a picture exceptional or so-so. Learning to really SEE what you're looking at can make a big difference in your photos. Too often we concentrate on only one thing in our pictures, and don't really notice what else is in there.

One of the most common mistakes is to focus on the people only, without any awareness of their surroundings. That can make for some less than stellar shots.

Take this old photo for example:

The photographer was probably so focused on getting a good picture of the people, he or she totally missed the fact a big split tree stump is "growing" out of the man's head who is standing far left.  If they had really been seeing the elements of the picture they could have changed the angle of the shot a little, and prevented that imperfection in the picture.
